Medical Challenge Case

Case: The Fly

S: 35-year-old female; 6 months pregnant with first pregnancy; complains of abdominal pain.

O: Patient’s water breaks during examination and the amniotic fluid leaks onto the floor; her pelvic examination revealed something sticking out from the vagina which felt like a piece of wood (somewhat like a little tree log extending into the vagina). There is a rivulet of fluid and baby was delivered; its head was a large bubble of membranes with a wrinkled gray gelatinous mass under it. The baby had gigantic bulging eyes like the eyes of an enormous fly staring blindly at the ceiling; long gray folds of flesh draped down to the grinning mouth.

A: What is your diagnosis?

P: What is your treatment plan?
